INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ORGANISES A SERIES OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES DURING THE WELCOME FRESHMEN WEEK “FROM WASTE TO WONDER”: COLLECTING RECYCLED MATERIALS

On September 25th 2023, International University (VNU-HCM) launched the“From Waste to Wonder” as part of the welcome freshmen week in the academic year 2023-2024.

Vietnam produces millions of tons of waste per year, but only a small portion of waste is properly recycled. In response to this situation and the challenges posed by waste pollution, International University (VNU-HCM) is sponsored and accompanied by Lagom Vietnam Joint Stock Company and BTR Global Company Limited for the ‘RESY’ Green Accumulation Project to organise a series of activities for collecting recycled material, called “From Waste to Wonder” from September 25th-27th, 2023. The purpose of this project is to raise the awareness and behaviour of faculties, staff and students to collectively protect the environment in order to promote the economy and boost the recycling rates in Vietnam.

“From Waste to Wonder” project features 2 booths: “Return to Recycle – Collecting paper boxes, receiving green gifts by Lagom Vietnam Joint Stock Company and “From Plastic to Fantastic” – Collecting nylon and plastic objects” by Green Touch project, offering many attractive prizes. Students can also participate in many educational minigames to gain a better understanding of recycling.

Assoc. Prof. Le Van Canh, Vice Rector of International University shared “Our university’s students, lecturers, faculties, and staffs participate in the “From Waste to Wonder” Workshop with the aim of fulfilling the mission towards the sustainable development through the sustainable development education of the University, under the motto “International University (VNU-HCM) – Working Towards Building A Sustainable World.

Guests and many students listen to the talk about “Responsibility culture, the foundation for Sustainable Development”.

Director of Lagom Vietnam Joint Stock Company – Mr Le Trung Thong and Project Director of the Green Accumulation Project at BTR Global Company Limited – Ms Do Thi Minh Trang, attended the program and enthusiastically shared: “It is the attention of the Board and the wholehearted support of the students, lecturers, faculties, and staffs of International University that give us the strengths to continue expanding and implementing many programs like this, in order to raise the awareness, change the behaviour of the society regarding waste sorting, reusing and recycling, aiming towards a circular economy.

Especially, the program “Trash for gifts” in the workshop has brought new knowledge and perspective in environmental protection, recycling and practical techniques for processing old fabrics and clothing from the Green Accumulation project. This helped spread the message of “turning waste into resources” aiming to join hands to build a green, clean, and beautiful environment.

The program “Trash for gifts” contributes to build a green, clean, and beautiful urban area, fostering a civilised, modern, and environmentally friendly environment.

This series of activities will help the university’s students, lecturers, faculties, and staff to get a clear picture of recycling activities, to become a responsible consumer in line with Sustainable Development Goal 12. It alsocontributesto the protection of a green, clean, and beautiful environment, aligning with Ho Chi Minh City’s Netzero goal by 2050.”
