ASSOC. PROF. DR. LE VAN THANG TAKES OFFICE AS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
This afternoon,January 29th 2024, International University (IU, VNU-HCMC) solemnly held a ceremony to announce the decision on the university’s new President.Previously, on the evening of January 23rd 2024, Vietnam National University – HCMC (VNU–HCMC) signed and issued the Decision to appoint Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang as the President of IU. Born in 1979, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang is an expert in material technology and holds a Ph.D. from the Republic of France.
At the ceremony, on behalf of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of VNU–HCMC, Dr. Le Thi Anh Tram – Deputy Secretary of Party Committee, Head of Personnel Department – announced the Decision to appoint Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang as the President of IU.

At the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan – CPV (Communist Party of Vietnam) Central Committee member, Deputy Secretary, Director of VNU-HCMC – assigned tasks and sincerely shared about the process of appointing the President of the university. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan believed that the newly appointed President holds the qualities and capabilities to advance the university. Assoc. Prof. Dr. also acknowledged that taking on the role of the President of IU is a challenging task but this is the decision of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of VNU HCMC, including the internal reasons as the Head of the unit and being responsible for the decisions.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of VNU–HCMC, assessed that over the past 20 years of establishment and development, IU has achieved many outstanding results in training, research, investing in quality, facilities, especially the different salary mechanism compared to other public universities.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang also shared his thoughts on his first day of his tenure as the President of a multi-major and English medium public research university.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang assessed that the expectations from leadership levels, faculty, students, and society towards him are very high in the context where universities are on the path of comprehensive and fundamental renovation, autonomy, international integration, and competition in scale and training quality.
Mr. Le Van Thang also stated that in the near future, IU will focus on 4 areas: university governance; the working environment; building and completing the internal quality assurance system, focusing on examination and quality assurance; focusing on support and comprehensive skills for students.

At the ceremony, the Party Committee of VNU-HCM also sent flowers to express gratitude for the contributions of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tien Khoa – Former President of the International University for the term 2018-2023 – for his dedication to the school.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tien Khoa also wished the new President and IU more achievements in the new phase after turning 20.

| On the morning of January 17, 2024, the Council of the International University met and unanimously voted Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang as the President. Previously, the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the VNU-HCMC had carried out the process of transferring Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang, Vice President of the University of Technology HCMC, to take up duties at IU, appointed to join the Executive Committee, the Standing Committee, and to serve as the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee.
Following the proper procedure, after approval by the Council of the VNU-HCMC and the consensus opinion of the HCM City Party Committee, on the afternoon of January 23, 2024, the Director of the VNU-HCMC issued the decision appointing Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang as the President of the International University. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Thang is an expert in the field of material technology. He graduated with a doctorate degree in materials science and technology at the CEA Center and INP Grenoble Institute (French Republic) and was appointed as an associate professor in 2015. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thang has held many important positions at the University of Technology HCMC, such as: Head of the VNU-HCMC key laboratory for material technology, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Material Technology, Head of the Department of Science and Technology and Projects, Vice President… |
