INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ORGANIZED THE NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE ON BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN VIETNAM

On August 27 and 28, 2022, the 5th National Scientific Conference on Biological Research and Education in Vietnam (BRE2022) was held at International University (VNU-HCM) (IU-VNU)

The National Scientific Conference on Biological Research and Education in Vietnam is a prestigious and quality forum in the field of biological research and teaching. The conference is held periodically for scientists, educators and managers to announce the results of the new research, to discuss and find appropriate directions for the new context. This is considered an opportunity for lecturers and students to exchange with companies and businesses operating in the same field in Vietnam.

Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Van Thuan – Dean of the School of Biotechnology, Deputy Head of the Conference Organizing Committee – shared : “Biology and biotechnology is one of the three main pillars of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, playing an important role in life and socio-economic development. Following the success of the Conference in the past years, at the same time, facing the requirements of fundamental and comprehensive reform in education, meeting the needs of industrialization and modernization of the country, and actively integrating into the world, BRE2022 is held with the expectation of bringing breakthrough changes in teaching and research in biology to the new situation”.

This year, the conference attracted delegates who are professors, doctors, and lecturers from many universities across the country and who also presented professional reports including: “Training biology teachers in Vietnam in the Revolutionary industrial era 4.0”; “Organizing STEM-oriented teaching in Microbial and Viral Biology (Biology grade 10) based on model 6E”; “Integrating bioinformatics in teaching students in Vietnamese high schools”; “Teaching practical experiments in topic 10.2 of Enzyme technology and application”, etc.

The 5th Conference attracted nearly 30 leading experts, 20 units and enterprises in the field of Biology to participate.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Tien Khoa – Director of IU-VNU affirmed: “International University – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s first multi-disciplinary, international-oriented public university, with the goal of leading in education and research, especially in spearhead fields such as Biotechnology, Food Technology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Sciences”.

In particular, the conference was not only a scientific forum for educators, biologists, managers, and businesses to meet and exchange information, update domestic and foreign achievements, but also to present policy recommendations to support the development of prioritized areas in Biology research and teaching in Vietnam so as to bring Vietnam closer to the regional and international level.

On the matter of scientific education research and teaching biology in Vietnam, Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Van Hien – Vice President of Hanoi National University of Education; Senior Lecturer in Theory and Methods of Teaching Biology, said: “A biology teacher must first be a biology educator (not just a preacher), helping students understand biological knowledge and apply it into reality; seeing students’ abilities and inspiring them. In addition, teachers need to have the knowledge about technology and use smart technology in teaching, especially integrated teaching which has now become an inevitable trend; therefore it is necessary to apply STEM in experiments”

Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Van Hien – Vice President of Hanoi National University of Education – said that teachers in general and teachers of biology in particular should aim to teach students how to process the information recieved during lessons

As planned, during the 2 days of the conference, on August 27, the delegates reported at 3 subcommittees on Basic Research in Biology; Applied biological research in life and social development; Scientific research on education and teaching Biology in Vietnam. In the afternoon of the same day, there was a demo session of microscopy fertilization and cell nucleus transfer.

On August 28, after the conference, the delegates would have a scientific fieldtrip at the Center for Biotechnology in Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City Hi-Tech Agricultural Park and cloned cows farm in Ba Ria – Vung Tau.
