INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WELCOMED 2300 FRESHMEN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2022-2023

In the morning of October 24th, 2022, International University (IU)– Vietnam National University – HCMC, held the opening ceremony of the academic year 2022-2023 with nearly 2300 freshmen from 47 provinces and cities nationwide.

After two years affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, in the academic year 2022-2023, IU welcomed nearly 2300 freshmen who were accepted through six different admission methods. Among them, there were 1572 students who came from the national entrance examination, 409 from the SAT organized by VNU-HCMC, and 06 with excellent achievement of international and national awards, coming from many gifted schools nationwide.

The ceremony was honored to witness the presence of many distinguished guests, including IU’s board of presidents, representatives from VNU-HCM, representatives from the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, high school teachers, scholarship sponsors, press media, and thousands of IU K22 freshmen.

The distinguished guests and nearly 2300 freshmen from 47 provinces and cities during the National flag Salutation ceremony.

In his opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Tran Tien Khoa – President of IU shared his sincere thoughts to the students: “Set goals for your little achievements steadily and incessantly. Every lesson, every research, and even every obstacle that you need to overcome are meaningful. Rumi, an Islamic scholar, once said: “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

Every year, to encourage the undergraduate and graduate students with excellent performance, IU spent more than 37 billion VND from the university’s spending to grant scholarships to students with excellent performance in the admission examinations and their study at the university. The scholarships granted based on students’ performance consist of the full scholarships, which cover 100% of the tuition fee, ranging from 108 million to 156 million VND, and the partial scholarships, which cover 50% or 25% of the tuition fee, ranging from 27 million to 78 million VND. Particularly, it is impossible not to mention the tremendous support from the businesses and also our sponsors for their restless companionship and encouraging policy to IU students.

On behalf of the university, Assoc. Prof. Le Van Canh, Vice-President of IU, received the BIDV Scholarship from Mr. Hoang Xuan Thanh, Deputy Director of the Eastern Saigon branch of Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV).

On behalf of the university, Assoc. Prof. Le Van Canh, Vice-President of IU, received the Vietcombank Scholarship from Ms. Le Thi Hoa Binh, Deputy Director of the HCMC branch of Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank).

Assoc. Prof. Le Van Canh, Vice-President of IU, received the Agribank Scholarship from Mr. Ho Viet Dong Lam, Deputy Director of the HCMC branch of Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

In the ceremony, the university granted 166 scholarships with a total of more than 30 billion VND to praise and encourage the freshmen with great achievements in the past admission examinations. Among them, there were 86 full scholarships, which cover 100% of the tuition fee, ranging from 108 million to 156 million VND, and partial scholarships, which cover 50% or 25% of the tuition fee, ranging from 27 million to 78 million VND.

In the academic year 2022-2023, IU welcomed two valedictorians, Mr. Huynh Trung Duc – The student with the highest score in the VNU SAT, 955 specifically and Mr. Dinh Trung Quoc Anh – The student with the highest score in the national entrance exam, 28.45 specifically. Besides the full scholarship that covers 100% of the tuition fee, the two students also received two scholarships of 33 million VND from the sponsors, Investment and Industrial Development Corporation (Becamex) and the HCMC branch of Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) for their excellent performance.

Prof. Nguyen Dinh Tu, Chairman of the Office of VNU-HCMC, Director of the VNU-HCMC Fund, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh Huy, Vice-Director of Investment and Industrial Development Corporation (Becamex), and Ms. Le Thi Hoa Binh, Deputy Director of the HCMC branch of Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) for the university’s appreciation toward the scholarships granted to the two top scorers of IU this year admission batch.

In the academic year 2021-2022, the COVID-19 pandemic has put the education system in great difficulty and uncertainty. However, with their determination and solidarity, the university was able to successfully prevent the spread of COVID-19,  and meet numerous goals. Thus, the university was honored to receive a certificate of achievement from the Head of Ho Chi Minh City Police Department. The certificate was for the university’s excellent achievement in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring public security in the year 2021.

Lieutenant colonel Quang Van Phi Hung – Deputy Head of the Internal Political Security office, in charge of the Education Office, Division PA03, HCMC Police Department, on behalf of the Director of HCMC Police Department, delivered the bouquet and certificate to IU for their achievement in fighting COVID-19.

The ceremony also rewarded the lecturers and students with excellent achievements in research, innovations and social works. In the previous year, two groups of IU students proved their excellency in the two competitions: Team HCMIU – Thinking Tourists with the Gold medal of the 2021 ICPC Asia in Hanoi (Asia-Pacific region round) and the ELLA Project with the first prize in the SV-START UP 2021 competition organized by MoET.

In the academic year 2021-2022, there were also some individuals with excellent achievement, notably Dr. Pham Tan Nhat, a lecturer of the School of BA, winning the third prize in the Science and Technology for Young Lecturers of Higher Education Organizations Award 2021. Besides, the excellent achievements were from the university’s students, such as Mr. Nguyen Xuan Trung winning the First Prize with the silver trophy in the Super cup Category, Mr. Le Dinh Anh Huy winning the Consolation Prize in the category for IT students, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chau Anh, a student from the School of BA, being the national Students Leader 2022 Champion, and Ms. Le Nguyen Bao Ngoc, also a student from the School of BA, winning the title of Miss Intercontinental 2022.

The ceremony came to an end with the sharing from 2 outstanding students, who were known and loved not only by IU students but also peers nationwide. They are Ms. Le Nguyen Bao Ngoc, a K19 BA student, Miss Intercontinental 2022, also Miss World Vietnam 2022 runner-up, and Ms. Nguyen Thi Chau Anh, a K19 BA student, President of IU Union of Students, and the national Students Leader 2022 Champion.
