THE PROFESSION THAT BRINGS THE MOST JOY IS THE ONE YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Thị Hiệp – Dean of the School of Biomedical Engineering at International University (VNU-HCM) – the the most joyful profession is the one that brings you a sense of passion. She emphasized that passion alone provides the motivation to persevere through challenges of pursuing one’s dream.
On July 24, 2025, during the edition of the Public Lecture Series, at International University (IU), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Thị Hiệp delivered an inspirational and energetic talk to nearly 100 students from Thủ Đức High School.
With the topic “Which Profession Brings the Most Happiness in the World?”, International University aimed to help students from Thủ Đức High School find suitable future careers by encouraging them to pursue their passions.
Before attending the program, the students had the opportunity to visit and experience the International University’s modern laboratories.
Drawing from her own experience, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Thị Hiệp – Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering – emphasized that the journey of pursuing a graduate career is often challenging and demanding. Throughout that difficult path, many promising students and researchers have given up due to overwhelming pressure. According to Assoc Prof. Hiệp, the root cause is a lack of genuine passion for the fields they are pursuing. Instead of following their own passions, many chose their major based on parental expectations or the trends of the labor market. She stated that: “Because they didn’t truly love the field they were pursuing, they lacked the motivation to keep going when faced with too many hardships.”
The students had the opportunity to view a variety of scientific products developed by the various faculties and departments at International University.
To address this problem, Assoc Prof. Nguyễn Thị Hiệp emphasized the crucial role of passion in choosing and pursuing a career path. She candidly shared that she once faced similar pressures like family expectations and the urge to follow economic trends when making career choices. However, Assoc Prof. Hiệp realized that giving in to those external influences only made her feel lost and unfulfilled. It was only when she made the decision to wholeheartedly follow her passion that she began to experience true joy and satisfaction in both work and life. Therefore, Assoc Prof. Nguyễn Thị Hiệp encouraged students to let go of concerns about market trends or parental expectations and instead focus first on their own passions when planning their careers, only then should they consider external factors.
