THE PROGRAM “TOWARD THE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT” FOR THE COMMUNITY OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN HO CHI MINH CITY

On September 16, 2022, International University – VietNam National University Ho Chi Minh City (IU-VNU) had a meeting with HCMC’s Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City (DOET) for the implementation of the program “Toward the Sustainable Community Development”.

Attending the meeting were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Canh – Vice President of  IU-VNU, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Diep (Head of The Center for Innovation & Technology Transfer (CITT), Head of RCE Southern Vietnam), Ms. Dinh Kim Phung – Deputy Head of External Relations Department and Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang – Secretary of Youth Union. On the side of DOET, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc – Deputy Director of DOET and Heads of the Primary and Secondary Education Departments attended the meeting.

As a member of a network of over 170 global RCEs, IU-VNU proposes the Program “Toward the Sustainable Community Development” to promote sustainable development activities of the community with the initial approach through the community of high school students in Ho Chi Minh City. The goal of the program is to build an ecosystem for individuals and stakeholders including educational institutions, organizations, community associations, state agencies. The stakeholders canshare the information and experiences related to the implementation of 17 SDGs by 2030 as well as capacity building for teachers on sustainable development through training activities, annual sustainable initiative contests.

Speaking at the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Canh shared: “This program does not only promote sustainable development activities for the community, but also contributes to the implementation of the contents of the cooperation agreement signed between VNU-HCM with the City People’s Committee in the sustainable socio-economic development.”

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc highly appreciated the goals and contents of this program. Mr. Quoc also assessed that although the concept of sustainable development has now become popular, currently, students only have a very brief approach Therefore, this program is largely suitable for the current orientation of the education industry.

To conclude the meeting, DOET agreed that it would coordinate with IU-VNU to implement the program for all high schools in the whole city. To be specific, it would focus on organizing the contest “Challenges for Sustainable Society” for students and teachers as an initial approach before carrying out the annual activities on sustainable development in the following years.
