THE THIRD CONVERSATION ABOUT BLACK HOLES AT INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

In the morning of December 6th, 2023, International University held the seminar titled “Capturing and Studying Black Holes from the Arctic” by Prof. Paul Ho – General Director of East Asian Observatory (one of the 8 observatories participating in the first capture of a black hole).

The talk attracted many high schoolers and students from universities across Ho Chi Minh city.

In this talk, Prof. Paul Ho shared with the high schoolers from HCMC and IU students many takeaways on the journey to black hole imaging. On behalf of IU, Assoc. Prof. Dinh Duc Anh Vu – Vice-President of IU – was delighted to once again welcome Prof. Paul Ho to IU.

Prof. Paul Ho – General Director of East Asian Observatory – presented his talk titled “Capturing and Studying Black Holes from the Arctic”.

Assoc. Prof. Dinh Duc Anh Vu – Vice-President of IU – gifted Prof. Paul Ho with a lovely bouquet of flowers.

Like the previous occasions, the talk by Prof. Paul Ho was interpreted by Assoc. Prof. Phan Bao Ngoc – Chair of the Department of Physics. Scientists around the globe have been able to detect black holes by hearing, feeling, and ‘seeing’ them. However, they faced many difficulties while trying to capture the black holes owing to their distance from the Earth. Therefore, taking a photo of a black hole is often thought of as taking a photo of a donut on the Moon.

Therefore, astronomers have been working restlessly to improve the techniques and devices required to capture a black hole. In his talk, Prof. Paul shared with the audience the latest updates on the telescope that is under construction in Greenland. This work together with many other telescopes around the world are expected to bring us many images of black holes, which are much farther from us, with higher resolution.

Assoc. Prof. Phan Bao Ngoc – Chair of Department of Physics, IU – as the event’s interpreter.

One of the talk’s highlights was the enthusiasm from the high schoolers and students engaging in the event. They not only paid close attention to the speech but also raised many bold questions to Prof. Paul Ho and Assoc. Prof. Phan Bao Ngoc. Such enthusiasm proved the attractiveness of the studies of black holes and astronomy in Vietnam.

A high school student raised his question to the event’s main speaker.

Prof. Paul Ho and Assoc. Prof. Phan Bao Ngoc listened carefully and gave the answers to the questions by the audience.

Prof. Paul Ho and Assoc. Prof. Phan Bao Ngoc posed for a group photo with the audience.

The seminar is part of a specialized series by International University with a view to building a quality curriculum, updating advanced science-engineering knowledge, and providing participants with many takeaways.
